Hola, ola. I’m Lulu, based in the California Bay Area, originally from the Westside of Chicago by way of Honduras. I have the honor of coordinating School of the Americas Watch (SOAW), a U.S.-based nonprofit organizing in solidarity with Pueblos in Latin America and the Caribbean. I collaborate with grassroots organizations, policy advocates, scholars, and artists on educational initiatives and community-engaged research projects. Together, we address issues related to U.S. foreign policy and extractive industries in Latin America, as well as concerns regarding militarization and immigration. I collaborate to shape spaces and collective expressions of popular education, protest, and remembrance, paying tribute to the numerous lives affected by forced displacement and state-sponsored brutality. Grounded in joy, these spaces and expressions celebrate life, resistance, ancestry, and solidarity.
In my capacity as an Emergency Medical Technician and Search and Rescue Specialist, I volunteer with the American Red Cross' International Services and humanitarian aid groups in the Southern U.S. / Northern Mexico borderlands. My experiences in emergency medical services and humanitarian aid - especially those with displaced and criminalized migrant communities - have inspired me to continue my post graduate studies in forensic and international nursing.
In the realm of cultural arts, la cultura cura (sana, sana) / art heals and I get down with medicinal hip-hop, cumbia, and theatre. I love creative collaborations, community events, and narrative hacking—formal, and/or out there in the front yard.
What’re you currently working on? Dreaming, scheming?
Let’s get our pens and peoples together!
